Blind Contour Drawing - Free Project Download
Hi there. How are you?
When I was teaching high school art, one of the first lessons we’d introduce to our freshman was blind contour drawing.
“Blind contour drawing” is a fancy way of saying drawing without looking at your paper. It’s a simple technique that forces you to look closely at what you’re drawing, noticing all the details.
It’s way more fun than it sounds…Promise!
Not only is blind contour fun and relaxing, it’s an effect way to improve your drawing and observational skills.
Why Blind Contour Drawing?
Blind contour drawing is a great way train your eyes to “see” as artist sees, breaking complex forms down into simple shapes that can be recorded on your paper.
If you look closely, you can see some of the objects from the photo in this drawing. Drawings of the still life objects overlap and are distorted. That’s perfectly OK and expected.
The goal of blind contour drawing is to train your eye to notice detail and shape, which are key to realistic drawing. If you looked carefully at the subject matter and slowly recorded what you see without looking at your paper, you did it right!

I created a blind contour drawing project for my book, Me & My Ballpoint Pen. When things ran long, this project was edited out, so we decided to give it away for free. That way you have a chance to try before you buy book!
It’s just like what you’ll find in the book…Up close and detailed photos and with step-by-step directions to get you drawing in no time. If you like this project, you’ll love the book. There’s 20+ more projects just like it.
