Jen’s Handpicked Art Book & Supply Pairings

Pin it for later!

Hi there. How are you?

Books are one of my favorite gifts to give, and with the holidays right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to put together a list of art book and art supply pairings. All of these books I’ve personally reviewed and own and think they would make great gifts for the creative inclined folks on your gift list.

I’ve shared Amazon links to all of the books and art supplies on the list, but I encourage you to purchase locally if you can.

For extra style and sustainability points, “wrap” your gift pairings in a reusable zipper pouch or tote bag.

HEADS UP: As an Amazon Influencer, I earn a small commission when you make a purchase via the links in this post. It is a small way to support the I do without any cost to you. Thank you!

Let’s get started with my own book!

Grab my book (Click the photo!) , a sketchbook, and some Bic Crystals for an instant gift.

“Me & My Ballpoint Pen” by Jennifer Mullin (Me!)

My book pairs beautifully with a set of Bic Crystal Ballpoint Pens and a sketchbook with smooth paper. I’m really enjoying this diminutive Stillman & Birn sketchbook, but any sketchbook with smooth paper will do. I’ve included several on this list for you to choose from.

You can purchase a signed copy directly from me or snag one on Amazon.

Coloring Books by Juliette Crane

I recently visited my friend Juliette Crane and we spent some time working in her gorgeous studio. As a warm up, Juliette pulled out one of her coloring books, and started filling in a page with student grade watercolors, oil pastels, and a Stabilo All pencil. What a smart way to quickly overcome those blank page jitters and get yourself primed for more involved creative work.

Juliette’s coloring books would be great for adults and kids alike and the pages stand up to a range of art media, even a little bit of paint.

Amy and I have some overlap in our art practice and philosophies, and I think you’re really going to enjoy this book. “Draw Yourself Calm” is filled with nature inspired, free form patterns that are so fun and relaxing to draw.

All you really need is a Micron Drawing Pen (01) and a pad of watercolor paper. If you’d like to add some more supplies to this pairing, consider this watercolor set and a water brush pen.

Creative Abstract Watercolor by Kate Rebecca Leach

I first came across Kate Rebecca Leach of Essoldo Design when I was approached by David & Charles Publishing to write my book. “Creative Abstract Watercolor” is a D&C title and I was interested see one of their books in person, so I ordered a copy.

I like that this book focuses on abstract painting, as so many other watercolor books focus on realist techniques or subject matter. The projects are well designed and approachable for painters of all levels and she includes a detailed list of supplies needed for each project.

Kate recommends this watercolor paint set, along with this paper pad and paint brush.

Kate just released a second book, “Creative Abstract Mixed Media” that pairs nicely with her first.

Copy of the book, "Sketch!" by France Belleville - Van Stone with a sketchbook, colored pencils, pens and a pencil box.

Sketch! by France Belleville - Van Stone

I’ve been a long time follower of France as she was one of the first artists I saw drawing with ballpoint pen. “Sketch! The non-artist’s guide to inspiration, technique, and drawing daily life” sums up this book quite well. It’s a gorgeous book, illustrated entirely by France. Even the images of the supplies she uses are illustrated!

Pair this book with a Pilot pen (also one of my faves!), a Pro Art Sketchbook, and a mechanical pencil for a fab, affordable gift.

That’s All for Now

Please enjoy this photo of a sleeping Richard in a pretzel like form. This is one of several photos I found of him in this position on my phone. I don’t know how this is comfortable, but it sure is cute!

Ciao, Jen
